Major Research contributions:
Restoration and repair of damaged limb elements- Until 1980 it was known that higher vertebrates including human beings were unable to regenerate their lost body parts. Our research team could make it possible to induce regeneration in otherwise non regenerating cases with the help of retinoids, this was a breakthrough in the biomedical sciences in the area of tissue engineering using retinoids, many scientists all over the world followed this research . This scientific contribution showed the way to regenerate lost body parts in human beings.
• First Report in the world (1979) that Vitamin A induces limb regeneration in adult frogs after treatment with retinoids, confirmed by many scientists in the world (co-author Prof. I.A. Niazi, India).
• Collaborator (1979) of break through Indian Discovery that retinoids enhances Developmental potencies of blastema. This discovery has become an important subject of Developmental Biology taught all over the world.
• First Report (1986) that Vitamin A alters gene expression and cell cycle during PD duplication during limb regeneration (co-author Prof. H.J. Anton, Germany).
• First Report (1991) that Vitamin A influences wound epithelium during regeneration. (Co-author Prof. S. Koussoulakos, Greece).
• Confirmed (1992) that mammals too possess regenerative ability of finger tips.
• First comprehensive documentation (2007) of distribution and Molecular Taxonomy of herpetofauna in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan and nearby Aravalli ranges. NCBI (Gene Bank, USA) has released 105 DNA sequences (12 S, 16 S DNA sequences, H4 and Cytochrome-b genes).
• Designed recycling distillation technique (2004) that saves gallons of water during distillation processes.
• First to propose concept of sonotaxonomy in the world (2005) for taxonomic identification of animals and their monitoring based on sound.
• Developed prototype (1999) of Artificial finger non electrical and non-motorized for which National Academy of Science India honored with Swarn Jayanti Award.
• First to introduce in the state of Rajasthan, digital alternatives for replacement of animal dissection in Practical.
• Received Major Research Projects from UGC, CSIR, and ICMR (to study limb regenerative abilities of anurans) and recently completed one major project from the DST (adaptive radiations of endangered amphibians and reptiles) -2007-2011.
Major Contributions in Higher Education Policies:

Dear Professor Sharma,

I remember well Professor Niazi and you. I am really sorry it has taken me so long to respond personally to your very kind email after the Nobel award for Physiology or Medicine was made known in early October. By chance I had previously committed myself to three contiguous foreign meetings in late 2012 and have only recently returned from these.
I very greatly appreciate hearing from so many friends and colleagues, many of whom I have not been in touch with for several years or even decades.

I have attached two pictures which I hope you can find.

With very many thanks and all best wishes.
